Yet Another Biweekly UBports newsletter. YABUN?

            From your editor

Hi people, Here is another edition of the bi-weekly UBports news letter. Again with a bit of news and some sweet stuff.

In this edition some info about a  phone that became recently supported. There is some more news worth to mention, and the help section has a question for people in the US that are currently lacking 2G and 3G GSM network support.

Anyway, sit back, grab hold of your favorite beverage (me currently drinking Orangina light and listening to Jean Michel Jarre) and enjoy another episode of the UBports Newsletter.

            News, hot from the press

Oh boy, do we have news for you!

            Fairphone 4 got UT support!

The official announcement said: "We are pleased to announce that an Ubuntu Touch port for the Fairphone 4 is now available on the UBports installer. We are very excited about this latest port, not only is the Fairphone 4 a great phone but this is the first Android 11 based port for Ubuntu Touch."

But, in short, we've got UT running on the Fairphone 4! Woohoo!

To find out what all the fuss is about download the latest version of the installer and see for yourself: https://github.com/ubports/ubports-installer

To be completely fair: the work is not completely done yet.  There is still some work to do. But: the Fairphone 4 has all the features that make it a great UT phone:

            • Display out via USB-C

            • Huge storage (128 or 256 GB storage) and RAM (6 or 8 GB)

            • Excellent cameras (48 megapixels primary camera, 48 megapixels ultra-wide camera and 25 megapixels selfie cam)

            • 2 SIM options, 1 physical, 1 eSIM

            • 5G support.

It is clearly not a cheap device, but the price is fair and lets not forget its also a sustainable design. So it should be usable for a very, very, very long time.

The UT edition is based on Halium 11 so its a very modern base. And we will implement a lot of new features using the FP4 as a reference device. Thinks like:

            • eSIM

            • rounded corner avoidance

            • camera notch avoidance

            • Substitute always on display for the missing notification LED

            • get USB- C headphones working

OTA-23 mentioned in the latest Linux Format

Well, OTA-23 got a mention in latest Linux Format (page 8 of edition LXF292).  So, if you have a subscription then enjoy!

A tribute to the JingOS and their Tablet?

For a (very) brief moment we were all very happy. A company called JingLing released a Linux-based tablet and Fredldotme and Thekit ported UT to it and almost every thing worked! As can be seen on the device page for the jingpad over at devices.ubuntu-touch.io. But, as soon as the company started, it also faded away it seems. Still, YoutTube-er "Techhut" took some time to make a nice YouTube video about the Jingpad and even has some positive mentions of our beloved OS. Well, win some, lose some, I guess. But I for one would have liked it if they had stayed just a little bit longer. At least long enough for me to buy a JIngpad that is. Better luck next time, I guess...

            Apps in the spotlight

Here are some Ubuntu Touch apps to try out:

Please remember that OpenStore has a built-in option to donate to app creators. We urge you to use that button, so that we'll get more great apps on Ubuntu Touch.
