Ubuntu Touch 24.04 1.0 Call for Testing

We are pleased to announce that Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 RC 1 is now available for testing. This image is intended to become Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 which will be the first release of Ubuntu Touch which is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 is slated for release on 24 September 2025. Before then, we need to make sure it's ready to go.

What's been changed since the last blog post?

In the time since the last blog post, we actually had another Beta published (Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 2). However, due to infrastructure problem, we did not publish an accompany blog post. So this post will list some notable changes that entered as part of Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 2 and RC 1:

  • It's now possible to send and receive MMS again as the underlying components for MMS have been fixed.
  • Bluetooth pairing in System Settings has been fixed.
  • You can now disconnect from wireless display from the virtual touchpad on the phone's screen.

  • Media playback control is fixed in the top-panel indicator, in applications, and over Bluetooth headset.
  • Bug fixes and stability improvements across the system.

Known issues

There are some significant issues that are known to developers. We include some of the them here so you don't need to spend time reporting these bugs again.

  • It's a long-standing issue that fingerprint sensor on Fairphone 5 does not always work. It's unclear when this might happen. This might manifest itself as keyboard for the login password prompt jumps up and down very rapidly; this is due to Lomiri repeatedly getting error from fingerprint sensor.

How can I test?

If you're already running Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 1 or 2, you'll be offered Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 RC automatically. But if you're on Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-9, we recommend upgrading your phone to Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10 RC then upgrade to Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 via the new upgrader.

To receive Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10 RC, please do the following on the device:

  1. Update all of your apps using "System Settings -> Updates" or "My Apps" in the OpenStore app.
  2. Head to System Settings -> Updates -> Update Settings -> Release Channel.
  3. Select "20.04 Release candidate".
  4. Go back to the Updates screen to install the downloaded update.

Once your phone is on Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10 RC, run the following command in Terminal app or via ADB/SSH to receive Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 1:

gsettings set io.ubuntu-touch.system-settings.update offer-development-release true

After that, head to System Settings -> Updates again, and you should be offered to upgrade to Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0 Beta 1.

You can find your image version in System Settings -> About -> OS.

Side note: an update on Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10

Since the release of Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10 RC 1, the team at Volla has discovered a number of important issues on their devices, which causes us to delay the release of Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10. We've collaborated with Volla on these issues, and all the issues should be fixed now.

We've released Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10 RC 2 which include fixes for these issues and a number of other fixes. The new release date of Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10 is 24 September 2025 (the same date as Ubuntu Touch 24.04-1.0), so we encourage you to give a test on Ubuntu Touch 20.04 OTA-10 as well.
