The story of a worldwide community

Doing things together. That’s what the word ‘Ubuntu’ stands for in Africa.

This is the story of how a promising project got abandoned and one guy stepped in, trying to save it all.

He found other people to join the effort. One thing led to another, and the community kept growing.

Our mission is to establish and maintain an open source community for the development of the “perfect" mobile operating system. With respect for freedom of choice and choice, while being developer-friendly and highly secure.

The UBports Foundation is registered as a charitable Foundation under German law (gemeinnützige rechtsfähige Stiftung des bürgerlichen Rechts).

The UBports Foundation

The foundation saw its first daylight in 2017, when the project became too big. A necessary upgrade to ensure that private and corporate sponsors were able to talk to the foundation about their wishes to contribute to the initiative. The UBports Foundation is founded by Marius Gripsgard, Ricardo Mendoza, Jan Sprinz, Florian Leeber and Ewald Pierre.

The foundation provides financial, organizational and legal support to the whole community.  It also serves as an independent legal entity to which community members can contribute. All contributions are considered valuable, and with the knowledge that contributions will be maintained for public benefit.

The UBports community has set the following goals:

To help and promote the collaborative software development of Ubuntu Touch;

To assist the community with defending their interests and the sustainable development;

To promote the use of Ubuntu Touch as viable solution for mobile devices;

To facilitate synergies, collaboration and fund raising efforts;

To actively collaborate on the definition of roadmaps for further development.

We’ve grown to a very active and open community. Everybody’s welcome to contribute. Whether you’re into code, graphic design, documentation, testing or more, we’re looking for you!
